Configuration frame changes when editing in VirtualDub 1.9.5

Post by Hawfinch »

I have noticed the following issue with NV 2.2 in VirtualDub 1.9.5 (the new stable release):

I open a DV capture in VDub and use the select and cut tools to trim the beginning. I then open the NV filter and in the Configuration window select a frame for noise analysis. When I click on the Configure button, the NV main window opens, but with a different frame.

The problem appears to be that NV is unaware of the cut I made at the start of the video. If I select the first frame of the trimmed video, for example, NV opens the first frame of the original, untrimmed video.

I am fairly sure that this did not happen in the previous version of VDub that I was using (1.88). The obvious workaround is to do the trimming after setting up the NV filter.

Probably something related to the new frame serving introduced in the recent VD. We will check what could be done from the side of NV to avoid that problem.

Thank you for reporting.

Another workarond, is to open the file in an avisynth script,
and to the trim in the script.
The script will be something like this :

AVISource("File.avi")
trim(1000,10000)

This will keep the frames 1000 to 10000. Number of frame
is exactly the same than in VDub.

As i personnaly alway doing that, i'm not having encounter the problem.
I've also referenced this problem on the VDub forum.

Hello.

Go to VDub forum, and try new 1.9.6 current test version,
maybe it solves the problem.

Another problem discoverd during the same process, but occors
even with last 1.9.6-test5 : frame between the video/timeline
and the main NV window are shifted from the value of the LAG of
the filter (so, the same as the temporal radius). I've also posted
this problem on VDub forum. Not a too big problem, as the 2 workaround
are :
- go to frame 102 to build noise from frame 100 (when radius is 2).
- Disable temporal filter during build noise (i've choose this).
- Still using 1.8.8... I personnaly can't, i need some specific
property of last versions.

But, of course, it's better without the problem.

Reply from VDub author :
This appears to happen because the filter is declaring a non-zero lag for the preview even though it probably shouldn't. Notice that if you step backwards and forwards, there isn't a lag in 1.8.8 when there should be. This works in 1.8.x because that version doesn't compensate for the lag in the preview window. In 1.9.x, however, it breaks because the preview window now does compensate for the delay, and that causes the discrepancy that you see. I'll have to see if I can either contact the author or put in some sort of workaround, because as far as I can tell, the filter should simply be declaring zero lag in this case.
I think this little problem can wait to be solved when you'll do an update
of the VDub version, instead of obliged him to make so tweak.

Thank you for reporting!

The author of VirtualDub contacted me and we will find a solution together. Most likely, the zero lag value in preview should resolve the issue completely.

Thank you,
