Low quality shaded tones

Post by R2Prod »

Hello everyone,

I'm a happy user of Neat Video for Final Cut since a few days. The plugin works fine, but i'm having a problem with the final result.

The shaded tones (in clips with very few details, like a blue sky, a large table, a grey screen,...) are not smooth. The color looks like a bad quality JPG picture.

Here is an example of what I get when I use Neat Video to remove noise on a grey/blue screen (detail of the background of the video).

I think you'll have to open the image full size to see what I'm talking about.

Can someone tell me how to get rid of this poor quality gradation ?

Thanks !

If you mean banding on fine gradients, that is most likely introduced by output compression. I recommend to start diagnostics by switching the output to an uncompressed format/codec. This may immediately show a significant difference. The next thing in FCP would be to switch rendering (in Sequence settings) to RGB color space if it is not RGB now. This usually also works better in terms of banding.

Hope this helps,
Vlad
