Any Benchmarks Using i7 Yet?

Post by Meld »

I would like to know what speed improvements are to be had if I get the cheapest 920 i7 nehalem cpu (~$600) over say a Core 2 Duo E8400 (~$300).

Looking to upgrade my PC and upgrading to E8400 is pretty cheap but if i7 is 10x faster then I may as well get that.

Hello.

I've made benchmark, so here the results.
Test has been made with VDub plugin, video input and output
was in huffyuv (YUY2 mode), VDub version 1.8.6.
The video was a 2000 frames 720x480. Pluggin had temporal
filtration activated, with a frame of 2 and 0% threshold.

On a DualCore 3.2GHz (and NOT a Core2Duo) process time
was around 10 or 11 minutes.
On a i7 965, process time was around 3 minutes. All 8 CPUs where
equaly used at around 75%.

I must add something : i7 has a 8Mo 3 Level cache, and my DualCore
has 2Mo 2 Level cache. A 720x480 frame in 4:4:4 is around 1Mo.
So, maybe the fact that all the data may have been able to fit in
the cache have help. With HD size (720p or 1024p), the gain is speed
may not be so significant, as data size is larger, and they may not
fit in the cache. On the other hand, the bandwith memory has
also increased a lot, so....

Well, you have a least one information.

Edit : Memory is triple channel DDR3-1600 Kingstone using XMP to configure, motherboard is ASUS P6TDeluxe/OCPalm.

We have tried the same setup on the following hardware: Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ 3.3GHz.

The processing time is about 3 min 40 sec.

Hope this helps,

What would be faster out of Phenom II 920 or i7 920?

Vlad,

Has anyone tried this with the AMD six core CPU?

I don't have exact data, but on my i7@980 with 64bits versions, i have :
- Around realtime (24fps) for 720x480 videos.
- I've started yesterday evening (around 20h00) filtering on a 1080p video of around 1h50. This morning at 9h00 it wasn't finished (but i've not switched on the screen to see what % it was).
But, yesterday evening, when i've checked progress around 1h30-2h00 after starting, it was at around 16%.

These are not very precise datas, you can't use it to make benchmark comparison, but, for those who want only a rough estimation...

Computer
Asus P6TSE
i7-930 overclocked to 3.8 (stock is 2.8)
12GB memory
1000 watt power supply
GTX470 video card
C Drive: velociraptor
Video Drives: Samsung F3 X 3 (no raid)
Windows 7 64 bit

Footage
HDV with NEAT applied and no other heavy effects or layering
Export with Premiere Pro CS5 5.0.3 (Production Premium)
Length 58 minutes
Export to MPEG2 for Blu-ray (1440X1080i at 23.0 Mb/sec CBR - 1 pass), audio = 320 Kb/sec

With NEAT applied to 99% of the video, it took about 8 hours to export 1 hour of video. Overclocking resulted in a 25% increase in performance.

Looks wonderful :)
